The Speaker of the Indonesia’s House of Representatives has found himself embroiled in the largest corruption case in recent Indonesian history.
He has arranged secret meetings with executives of Freeport, the biggest miner and tax payer in Indonesia, and attempted to extort two billion dollars in shareholdings from the company claiming to be making the request on behalf of the President (Joko Widodo) who would receive 11 percent of the proceeds and the Vice President (Yusuf Kalla) who would receive 9 percent of the proceeds.
The suspicious executives from Freeport recorded the entire conversation and passed the tape onto the Energy Minister from where it was made public.
After denying the meeting even took place, the Speaker claimed that he “was joking” when he asked for 20% of the company’s Indonesian operations.
Will "Mr Untouchable" finally lose his teflon coating and be brought down by his latest audacious move? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
