Bahasa 'Gual' :
Whether you call it 'bahasa gaul' or 'bahasa sehari-hari', there is no denying that this informal register of Indonesian is more commonly used in social interaction in Indonesia than the formal register that our students are exposed to and study in schools. How much of this language should we teach or expose our students to? That is a question that promotes vigorous debate between the proponents and opponents of bahasa gaul. In Queensland we are lucky to have our local 'expert', Halim Nataprawira, who is completing his PhD study in the area of bahasa gaul. He has provided resourcefulindonesian with several dialogues and readings (below) which highlight the use of bahasa gaul and could double up as classroom resources for exposing students to this communicative form of Indonesian.
