Below you will find the first four snippets from the Indonesian horror movie Sumpah Pocong di Sekolah. The video clips contain English subtitles. The entire movie is also available on YouTube but I have been able to access the bilingual transcripts for the first four scenes only. These are included as PDF files below each of the clips. These would be particularly useful for senior students studying the use of 'bahasa gaul', or Jakarta slang, which is widely used by both the young and the not-so-young in Jakarta.

Max Havelaar
The exploitation of 19th-century Indonesia by Dutch colonialists provides the basis of this historical drama that centres on an idealistic Dutch colonial officer posted to Indonesia. He is convinced that he can make the necessary changes that will actually help the oppressed native people of the Lebak Regency of which he is in charge. However, his good intentions come to naught as his Dutch superiors, and corrupt local officials who do business with the Dutch, work against him to maintain the status quo.
There are literally hundreds of full Indonesian movies available on YouTube, many of them very recent releases. These movies represent the whole range of genres but tend to be dominated by action, comedy and horror. Occasionally a suitable film for teenage students with a social conscience can be found, dealing with such issues as inequity of opportunity, education friendship and teenage relationships. You will find links to only there types of films below as they are rated for "G" for general viewing. Unfortunately, these movies generally do not come with sub-titles so they require viewers to have at least an intermediate-level command of the language to fully appreciate the film.

This is a biographical film on the life of Joko Widodo (more commonly known as "Jokowi"), the current Governor of DKI Jakarta and the favored candidate of the Indonesian people to become the next president of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014. From humble beginnings as the son of a poor Javanese carpenter, through hard study and respect and perseverance he was able to gradute from high school and university and go on to become the owner of a thriving furniture export business. From there he gained the support of Megawati Sukarnoputri to be elected as the two-term Mayor of Surakarta (Solo). His success and even international recognition in this position saw him leave his second term in office to pursue the position of Governor of Jakarta which he won despite being the underdog. His integrity and honest, traits which are foreign to many if not most Indonesian politicians further endeared him to the public both within Indonesia and internationally as he is seen as a breath of fresh air in a political system plagued with corruption and nepotism. Maybe, just maybe, if he succeeds in becoming the next president, he is the one candidate with the public following and personal willingness to make make the changes that need to be made for the country to move forward as a modern economic regional power.
Ruma Maida
This film follows the struggle of a teacher to keep a derelict building she has been using to teach street children from being demolished for development. The story intertwines contemporary Jakarta during the 1998 riots which brought an end to the Suharto regime with events during the final period of the Japanese occupation, the rise of Sukarno and the desperate efforts of the Dutch to hold onto Indonesia. How is the past related to the present situation? Watch and find out ... you won't be disappointed!

The Raid Redemption
This fast-paced action movie is rated "R" in Australia due to the high level of violence and course language (even though it is in Indonesian). This online version comes with both Korean and English subtitles. The movie takes the martial arts genre to levels not seen since the days of Bruce Lee and has won this movie accolades all over the world. Behind all the violence, however, there is a strong theme of family loyalty running through the movie which allows the story line to play out to a 'feel-good' ending. If you watch this be prepared to cringe at the level of violence - I did at a special screening of this film in Brisbane and would not recommend it to the faint-hearted.
