Jane Elizabeth Kelpie's Regu AFL Unit
Nothing in recent memory has set the Indonesian-teaching fraternity abuzz like Jane's universally acclaimed AFL Unit. Jane has generously permitted Resourceful Indonesian to publish her unit on this newly-created "Be A Good Sport" page. Jane has also given permission to make any editorial changes to the original unit and this offer has been taken up. The changes made are minor and generally of a linguistic nature to make the unit sound more authentic in Indonesian. Naturally all users of the unit are free to modify and differentiate the unit to meet their specific needs. And, for all the NRL (Rugby League) supporters out there, I am in the process of using Jane's template to create an NRL version of this unit. Sekali lagi, terima kasih sedalam-dalamnya, Bu Jane, atas kesempatan untuk kerjasama ini.
Jim Athanasiadis' Regu NRL Unit
When Jane Elizabeth Kelpie created her remarkable AFL Unit (above) I promised at the time that I would use it as a template to create an NRL Unit for the states of New South Wales and Queensland where the popularity of Rugby League football far exceeds the popularity of Australian Rules football. I have spent two days completing this task and it wasn't as easy as I initially thought it would be. The main issue was that Australian Rules football was already established a small presence in Indonesia with a handful of clubs already in existence. However, this is not the case with Rugby League which has not been able to establish a foothold in Indonesia. With this reality I had to go down a more creative path with the second half of my unit, focusing on imaginary future NRL penetration in Indonesia as opposed to the current reality. Despite this, I think I have pulled it off and the students of New South Wales, Queensland and even those in Victoria who follow the Melbourne Storm Rugby League team should enjoy completing the activities within this unit. Teachers in Western Australia should not despair and feel left out because there actually is a bit of a Rugby League following in the state. Back in the mid to late 1990s, the Perth Reds were one of the 10 teams in the renegade Super League, as were the Adelaide Rams from South Australia.
