Special 2014 Presidential Election Section

The race for the Indonesian presidency has begun in earnest with Megawati Soekarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP)  nominating the highly popular Governor of Jakarta Joko Widodo as their presidential candidate. This has infuriated the leader of the Greater Indonesia Party (Gerinda) and former Special Forces (KOPASUS)  chief and son-in-law of Suharto who is crying foul by claiming Megawati Has gone back on a 2009 promise to nominate him as PDIP's preferred presidential candidate. Prabowo is seen by many as the 'faceless' man behind the 1998 Jakarta riots which led to the deaths of a number of university students and several hundred ordinary citizens (mainly of Chinese descent). The nomination of Jokowi gives Indonesia its first real opportunity to break away from the spectre of rule by former military generals and their cronies so, in a way unbecoming of Javanese, Prabowo is trying to stay in the race through "money politics" and personal mudslinging at Megawati and  her "puppet" Jokowi. Hopefully the Indonesian electorate has matured enough to see through this desperation and  assign Probowo and his likes to the annals of history of a bygone era.

Did you know that each of the twelve parties that contested Indonesia's House of Representatives elections in April drew out a number between 1 and 12 and that was the number assigned to all candidates for that party throughout all of Indonesia. In Indonesia, voters use a nail to punch a hole next to their chosen candidate or party. When these punched ballots are held aloft during the local counts, witnesses can see the light shining through the hole. The KPU, Indonesia’s electoral commission, tried to switch to pen and paper in 2009, like most countries without electronic voting. But many Indonesians did not know what to do and 14 per cent of the ballots in the legislative election were invalid.There is no preferential voting, just  a single candidate is pierced. Each of the parties also have an official Marching Tune for the election. I have gathered the  marching tunes of the various parties in order of their finishing position in the poll. Indonesian elections are a time of festivity drawing large crowds and shutting down major city roads as each party is allocated a day to campaign. Who Is Joko Widodo?

Joko Widodo is an Indonesian politician and the current governor of Jakarta. He is often better known by his nickname Jokowi. He was previously the mayor of Surakarta (often known as Solo in Indonesia). He was nominated by his party, the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle (PDI-P), to run in the 2012 Jakarta gubernatorial election. He was elected governor of Jakarta on 20 September 2012 after a second round runoff election in which he defeated the incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo. Jokowi's win was widely seen as reflecting popular voter support for "new" or "clean" leaders rather than the "old" style of politics in Indonesia. The election of Joko Widodo as Indonesia's next President may have bee a huge step forward for democracy in Indonesia but on Friday, 26 September 2014 the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), which is currently dominated by a coalition of political parties in Prabowo Subianto's so-called "Permanent Coalition", took a gigantic backward step by voting in a law which effectively puts an end to the direct election of provincial governors and city mayors across all of Indonesia. In a move that was flagged by Prabowo during the presidential election campaign, this policy heralds a return Suharto-era politics, as these position will now be decided by the local legislative assemblies and not by the people. What hope will will current popular reformist governors such as Jakarta's Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (more commonly referred to as Ahok) or Central Java's Ganjar Pranowo have of being re-elected when their fate will be in the hands of politicians with vested interests? Reaction to the new law has generally met with negative sentiments but, before we look at the press coverage, lets explore some of the online reactions of the public.
