The school is best-known throughout Indonesia as the institution where the current Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, completed his junior secondary education. As its number suggests, it is the premier state junior high school in the city of Surakarta and has the academic, cultural and sporting achievements to maintain the top-ranking position. It is also accredited as a Sekolah Adiwiyata which means the school community is concerned about maintaining a clean, healthy and beautiful environment and has passed a stringent application and inspection process to gain this accreditation from the Ministry of the Environment.
