Inside Joglo Villa No.4
A Bird's Eye View
Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world with 1,604 species of birds. Java, alone, has more species than Metropolitan France. To illustrate this richness, Hills Joglo Villa recently completed an 85 square metre aviary and stocked it with nine species of non-endangered breeding pairs of Indonesian parrots. The selection of these species was carried out in discussion with the local Semarang Conservation Authority, Badan Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA). This aviary has proven popular with vistors to HJV and has allowed many foreigners, in particular guests from cruise ships visiting Semarang, to gain an appreciation of this biodiversity. Perhaps the most beautiful bird at HJV is the Javanese Parrot, or Betet Jawa. Many visitors are surprised to see a species of parrot so far to the east of the Wallace Biogeographic Line. HJV hopes to work with BKSDA to breed up Betet Jawa and re-introduce it locally. Recently a wild African Love Bird bird landed on this aviary and allowed itself to be captured by hand. This is a bit disturbing as it is not the first introduced captive bird that has been seen flying around the HJV environs.
