What is the Potential of a Language Centre
Resourceful Indonesian will attempt to provide up-to-date reviews on all Indonesian-related apps available for both the Android and Apple platforms. There are a large number of language-related apps available but I will try to review all of them and identify those that may be of some use to teachers and learners of Indonesian. If anyone has come across other useful apps please share your discovery with us via the Contact Form at the bottom of the Homepage. To access the 'Install' page for any of the apps below, just click on the logo.
Android Market Apps
Indonesian Country Facts
This app provides a simple and easy way to learn about Indonesia. It is full of interesting country facts that will teach you about Indonesian culture, geography, history, people and more. All the country facts and images were carefully selected and reviewed for accuracy and relevancy. The app is ideal for tourists traveling to Indonesia or any individual who wants to learn a lot of interesting tidbits about Indonesia. Highly recommended!
Indonesia TV Live
Needless to say that the quality of live television streamed from Indonesia will depend on the speed of your internet connection. There are a large number of apps available for obtaining live television from Indonesia but the one above is one of the highest-rated on the Android market.
Indonesian News Online
Indonesian News is highest-rated news reader app in the Google Play Store and is a fast and easy way to read news in the Indonesian language. It gives you easy access to read news from the most popular news sources from Indonesia.
Berita Indonesia
Berita Indonesia provides a fast and an easy way to read the latest news from Indonesia. Save your time by reading multiple Indonesian news sources using this single app.
The Jakarta Post
If your language skills are not up to reading the news entirely in Indonesian, then The Jakarta Post is the online newspaper for you. Since its inception, it has been Indonesia's highest selling English-language daily.
SBS Your Language
Watch the Indonesian news live on streaming television or listen to the podcasts at your leisure.
Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia
Aplikasi ini adalah aplikasi luring resmi Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia, untuk pencarian kata, frasa, dan ungkapan dalam Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia Edisi Kelima (KBBI V).
Indonesian English Dictionary
This dictionary app actually provides you with access to multiple dictionaries. Just type in the word and you will be able to search many online English or Indonesian dictionaries simultaneously. Select your dictionary by scrolling across the list at the bottom of the page.
KATLA Wordle Indonesia
This is the app version of the popular web-based Indonesian word guessing game based on Wordle. You get six chances to guess the secret five-letter word so you need to strategise on building on the correct letters identified through each progressive guess. If the letter is contained in the target word and is in the correct position in your guess, it is highlighted in GREEN. If the letter is contained in the target word but is in the incorrect position in your guess, it is highlighted in ORANGE. If the letter does not appear in the target word, it remains unhighlighted. The main difference between this app and the web-based version is that you are not limited in the number of consecutive games that you are permitted to play. The web-based version limits players to one word per day so players are able to compare and discuss their results with friends all over the world as they are all playing the same game on any given day.
Digantung
This addictive Hangman-type app is fun to play but also extremely sneaky at the same time. Although it provides the first letter of each word, it attempts to trick you by using a range of prefixes and suffixes attached to the base word to throw you off the scent. For example, 'ber~', 'di~', 'meN~', '~nya', '~ku' and '~mu'. Every 20 or so words it also resorts to cheating (I don't know if this is intentional or a fault in the database) by using English vocabulary such as 'sharkbait' and even peoples's names such as 'alistair'. Despite its faults, I play it a lot and like the fact that it comes in three levels of difficulty. Probably more useful for senior students and adults rather than for junior secondary students because it really makes you think about the prefixes and suffixes in the words. For a free app, you can't really complain!
Hangman Indonesia
This version of Hangman is more suitable for lower secondary as it's vocabulary is thematically-based around the topics of All - Animal - Fruit - Places - Country - Brand. Players select their own topic then guess the hidden word. Again, as in the previous Hangman app above, the database is imperfect as 'Kuala Lumpur' was one of the answers in the 'Country' category and prevented me from maintaining my 100% record in this particular category!
Indonesian Word Of The Day
This word-of-the-day app promises to give you a new Indonesian word with audio from now till eternity. That's 365 new words each year. The app displays, for each day of the year, a word and an example sentence of the word, with a human-voiced sound of how to pronunce both the sentence and the word, helping to improve the student's pronunciation.
Indonesian-English Translator
This free translator can quickly translate from Indonesian to English and English to Indonesian words as well as complete sentences. Instant translation and the full validity of the words. This App will be very useful to people studying a foreign language (travelers, students and everyone who raise their level of language). Its interface is very simple and easy to use. Due to the favorites list and the history you can look through the translated information offline.

However, the app does have a couple of minor drawbacks. Firstly, you need to continually download the picture files for the various categories of the app as these do not come pre-installed. Secondly, there are no audio files or support included unless you upgrade to the 'Premium' version. Within each category, such as 'Animals' for example, there is a large vocabulary bank, enough to satisfy the most advanced of learners, Worth a try!

Right Now Conversation
This app is both a digital phrase book and a two-way digital interpreter and translator where the utterances can be input either verbally through your device's built-in microphone or in writing using the keyboard. This free version comes complete with only the first of the twelve thematically-based conversational modules which can be accessed in the full version. However, this is sufficient for learning the very basic conversation skills that you will need to introduce yourself to people and to express your opinion.
The interpretation and translation function is more complete although the speech that is input through the in-built microphone is not always picked up correctly. Your device will let you know (in writing) what it heard you say and, if it didn't hear you correctly, you can always have another go. You will get a more accurate translation by using your device's keyboard to input your utterances in writing. I like the way the app allows you to switch the language direction at the press of a flag icon, and to even switch to a third language altogether from one of the ten languages available in the translation function's database. A useful app if travelling to Indonesia and meeting a range of people from Indonesians to tourists from other mainly Asian countries.
One thing I did find annoying was when I first attempted to run the app, there was an annoying nuisance window that appeared and was written in Korean. By trial and error, I eventually discovered that this nuisance box was actually asking me to select the input language (English) and then click 'Okay'. Obviously the developers of this app are Korean and did not give much thought to speakers of other languages. I actually almost gave up trying to open the app but, if you persevere, you will get there eventually, more so if you can read Korean!
